Application Development

As a career option, there are a number of industry sectors that need GIS developers.  These include:
  • Local, regional and central government
  • Forestry
  • Crown research institutes such as Scion, Niwa
  • SOE’s such as the Metservice
  • Utilities
  • Telecommunications
  • Forestry
  • GIS consultants who provide solutions and services to the above sectors
  • Planning consultancies
  • Engineering companies
For those wishing to pursue a career in Development side of Esri GIS, there are a number of things to consider.  Firstly, there are speciaties within the Esri stack.  These include desktop, mobile and web.
For desktop you have:
  • The various scales such as ArcMap (Basic), ArcEditor (Standard) and ArcInfo (Advanced)
  • Extensions such as 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Network Analyst

For mobile you have:

  • ArcMobile
  • Run-time SDK’s
  • Smart phones
  • ArcPad

For web you have:

  • The various Esri API's such as Flex (Flash), Silverlight, JavaScript/HTML 5
  • ArcGIS Server
  • Options around web services such as the Esri standard web services or OGC (WMS, WFS etc)
Another consideration is what language to write in:
  • .Net (C#, VB)
  • Python
Plus a whole other bunch of considerations when building applications and / or core services and efficiency tools.
